3786 Private Leslie Cedric Smithwick

3786 Private Leslie Cedric Smithwick

Studio portrait of Smithwick C L, believed to be 3786 Private (Pte) Leslie Cedric Smithwick, 5th Field Company Engineers from Collingwood, Victoria. An 18 year old cooper prior to enlisting on 15 July 1915, he embarked for overseas from Melbourne on 24 November 1915 aboard HMAT Ceramic (A40). Upon arrival in Egypt, he transferred to the 4th Division Engineers and proceeded to France with them in June 1916. After being wounded in action on 15 August 1916, he was evacuated to England for medical treatment. Pte Smithwick left England on 8 April 1917 to return to Australia and be discharged medically unfit for further service. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
