GREENSBORO Robert "Bob" Stanford Chandgie, 86, husband, father, grandfather, great- grandfather and dear friend to all, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2017 at his home in Greensboro, North Carolina. Born March 31, 1931, Bob grew up in Greensboro before transferring his passion for learning to the Northeast where he graduated preparatory school from Phillips Academy in Andover, MA. He went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts degree at Yale University in New Haven, CT, where he was also an active member of the Chi Psi fraternity. But it wasn't until after college when Bob achieved his greatest accomplishment, marrying the love of his life, Bettie Schiffman. Bob and Bettie shared 61 wonderful years together before Bettie's passing in 2014. Both will be happy to be back together again. When it was time to start his career, Bob returned to his hometown of Greensboro to work for Brown Reality before beginning his lifelong profession in the clothing business. As president of the National Shirt and Hat Shop, Bob successfully led his family's three store chain for 23 years. In 1977, Bob was pleased to keep the family tradition going, when he opened Chandgie's a men's clothing store in Carolina Circle Mall where he proudly worked alongside his two sons and daughter-in-law. A few years later, the store relocated to Forum VI at Friendly Center. In 1996, the haberdasher of 42 years chose to retire and close Chandgie's, after Starmount Corporation elected to turn Forum VI into an office building. Bob had a passion for sports and an uncanny ability to connect with everyone around him. In the early 1960's, he combined these two attributes to help bring the Youth Ice Hockey Organization to Greensboro. He truly enjoyed every minute he spent coaching and the many long lasting friendships that came along with it. Above all, Bob cherished his family. He will be deeply missed by his sons: Marc Chandgie, and Ric Chandgie and daughter-in-law Debra Chandgie, all of Greensboro. His three grandchildren, Christine Chandgie of Greensboro, Stan Chandgie and his wife Kelly of Greenville, South Carolina and Reid Chandgie of Greensboro, will always love and revere the memories of their grandpa. Bob also had the great fortune of having three beloved great-grandchildren, Ford, Wade and Reid, who shared a unique bond with their "Grandpa B.'' Bob also leaves behind his devoted sister Betty Roth of Greensboro. There will be a private graveside service for the family conducted by Rabbi Andy Koren. In lieu of flowers, Bob encouraged any contributions to be made in his memory to the Autism Society of North Carolina, 505 Oberlin Rd. Raleigh, NC 27605, or the Children's Home Society of NC P.O.Box 14608 Greensboro, NC 27415 Online condolences may be offered at www.forbisanddick.com
