      Obituary

      Richard J. Smithwick Richard J. "Smitty" Smithwick, age 66 of Bethel, died Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at Danbury Hospital. He was the loving husband of Pat Smithwick. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., October 5, 1943, son of the late Marinus and Phyllis (Toms) Smith-wick. He grew up in Carmel, N.Y. and graduated from Carmel Schools. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a member and daily communicant at St. Mary's Church in Bethel. For 45 years, he installed and repaired dental equipment in dental offices in Connecticut and New York. Smitty loved to golf and was also an active volunteer in Bethel community organizations. He was always helping those in need. Besides his wife, he is survived by his two daughters, Lisa Tam-bascio and her husband, Gary and Janine Tompkins and her husband, Jimmy; five grandchildren, Jimmy, Shannon, Gary, Brian and Robert; tow sisters, Joan Newman and her husband, Bert, Ann Ferro and her husband, Jerry; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Kathleen Smithwick. He also will be missed by his little Maltese dog, Bridget. The funeral will beconducted from the Bethel Funeral Home, 215 Greenwood Ave., Bethel, Saturday morning at 10:30 to a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at St. Mary's Church, Bethel at 11 a.m. Cremation will be at the convenience of the family. The family will receive friends in the Bethel Funeral Home, Friday evening from 5 to 8 and Saturday morning from 9:30 to 10:30. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bethel Visiting Nurse Association, One School St., Bethel, CT 06801.
