- [S169] Obituary - John Walter Smithwick, (The Irish Times).
John was surrounded by his beloved family when he died peacefully in the early hours of a Saturday morning.
Relieved to learn earlier in the year that a double transplant to heal the debilitating condition he'd had for years was not necessary, he waited in hope for the lung transplant that would save his life and give everyone who knew him many more years of his wonderful personality and friendship. Sadly, he couldn't wait any longer and he left us on the last day of August. He was 53.
Although he never married, John was, in the very best sense of the word, a family man. At his funeral, a glimpse of his never- ending love, support and advice for his family and friends was apparent in the tributes paid him by his nephew and nieces. ?
