John Francis Smithwick (City, 1880-85-86) of Drakeland and now of Birchfield, eldest son of Daniel Smithwick of Drakeland, who died 6th July 1869, by Ellen, daughter of James Morris of Waterford and nephew of Richard Smithwick of Birchfield, M.P. for the County 1846-47, was born 26th January 1844. He served as High Sheriff of the City in 1870 and subsequently became an Alderman and was Mayor for the year 1884. On coming forward as a candidate for the City he expressed himself in favour of Home Rule, Denominational Education, Fixity of Tenure at Fair Rents, Amendment of the Grand Jury Laws, and a stringent measure against Absenteeism. He was first elected unopposed, 26th February, 1880, and again twice returned. On being opposed at the general election in 1880, the only occasion on which his seat was contested, he defeated his opponent Mr Doherty by a large majority. He did not again come forward in 1886. He married 13th August 1878 Marion only daughter of James Power JP of Eastland, county Waterford. She died 11th May 1887, leaving issue.
