      Richard Smithwick (County 1846-47) of Birchfield was 2nd son of John Smithwick of Kilkenny, who died 1st December 1842, by Catherine his wife, who died 6th May 1865. He was returned without opposition as a Repealer in August 1846 and sat until Parliament was dissolved in July the following year when he did not again offer himself. He was a JP for the County and served as High Sheriff of the City in 1850. He married 23rd April 1844 Margaret, eldest daughter of William Delaney of Durrow, Queen's County, but had no issue by her, who died 27th July 1888 (having re-married 25th January 1864 George Reade of Archer's Grove Treasurer of the County). Mr Smithwick died 20th November 1860 in his 56th year. He had two brothers, Edmund Smithwick of Kilcreen House and Daniel Smithwick of Drakeland. Edmund Smithwick of Kilcreen House was elected an Alderman of Kilkenny in 1843 and was Mayor 1844-1864 and 1865, being the first Mayor of the Reformed Corporation and High Sheriff, 1852. He died 3rd November 1876 having married in 1832 Ellen, daughter of Michael Williams of Clonmel, and by her, who died 26th November 1864, left with two daughters, three sons - (1) John, now of Kilcreen Lodge, JP DL for the County, High Sheriff 1878, High Sheriff of the City 1860 married 2nd October 1861 Nina, 3rd daughter of James Devereux of Wexford and has issue; (2) Edmund, now of Kilcreen House, JP for the City, High Sheriff 1866, married 30th April 1873 Mary Agnes, eldest daughter of Daniel Smithwick of Drakeland and has issue; (3) Daniel O'Connell, died 19th October 1883, having married 26th October, 1869 Louisa Caroline, eldest daughter of Richard Joseph Walmesley of Pilgrim's Hall, Essex, and left issue. Daniel Smithwick of Drakeland, an Alderman of Kilkenny, 1849, High Sheriff, 1855 and Mayor 1857 died 6th July 1869 having married 17th April, 1843 Ellen, eldest daughter of James Morris, and left issue with daughters three sons - (1) John Francis, now of Birchfield MP for the City 1880 86, (2) Daniel, High Sheriff of the City 1873 married 26th August 1880 Frances, 3rd daughter of Pierce Power of Newtown, county Waterford, and sister of Patrick Joseph Power, MP for county Waterford since 1884, (3) Richard died unmarried 13th September, 1883.
